LingoSprout

Albanian for little ones

Learn Albanian for kids, one picture at a time.

LingoSprout teaches young children their first Albanian words with big pictures and audio they can tap to replay. Albanian is a full learning language in the app, not a translation bolted onto an English product — the same 266 picture cards and the complete 36-letter alphabet. Built for ages 2 and up, works offline, no ads.

Why Albanian is hard to find — and why it is here

Parents raising children in Albanian outside Albania, Kosovo or North Macedonia run into the same wall: the big children's language apps teach Spanish, French and Mandarin, and Albanian is simply not on the list. What is left is usually a word list for adults, a video channel, or nothing.

LingoSprout was built with Albanian as one of its three founding languages. All 266 picture cards carry the word and its audio in English, German, and Albanian, so no language gets a cut-down deck. A child learning Albanian meets the same cat, the same apple and the same red as a child learning English, with Albanian words and Albanian audio.

For a family whose grandparents speak Albanian and whose children are growing up in German or English, that means the heritage language gets the same quality of first-words experience as the school language — not a worksheet.

How a two-year-old learns an Albanian word here

No reading is involved at any point. A pre-reader can do all of this alone.

  • See itOne big, clear picture fills the card. Nothing else competes for attention.
  • Hear itTapping the card speaks the Albanian word. A child can tap it ten times in a row; nothing stops them.
  • Find itIn a quiz the app says the word and the child taps the matching picture. A wrong tap never buzzes, scolds or takes a star away — it offers another look.
  • Meet it againWords that needed a second try come back a few days later in a short practice round, so the ones that are nearly learned get the attention.

For families who speak more than Albanian

  • Show the home language alongsideA profile learning Albanian can display — and optionally speak — the same word in German or English, so a child hears both names for the cat before the cat meows.
  • A nudge, not an answerAfter a first-try miss in a quiz, a grown-up-enabled button says the word in the home language. It is scaffolding; it never reveals which picture is correct.
  • Off unless you turn it onThe translation line is off by default, because learning Albanian purely in Albanian is a legitimate choice and not ours to override.
  • Siblings can differOne device holds up to 8 profiles, so an older child can be learning German while a younger one starts Albanian.

Questions, answered

Good to know.

Is there an Albanian learning app for toddlers?

Yes. LingoSprout teaches Albanian to children from age 2 using picture cards with audio, picture quizzes and short practice rounds. It needs no reading, works offline, and 5 of its 15 categories are free in Albanian.

How can I teach my child Albanian vocabulary at home?

Short and often beats long and rare at this age. A few minutes of picture cards, with the child tapping to replay the word as many times as they like, then a quiz on the same handful of words. LingoSprout is built to be used this way — sessions are short by design, and a daily time limit can be set so the app ends the session for you.

Can children learn Albanian using pictures and audio alone?

That is exactly how the app works, and it is why it suits ages 2 and up. Every control carries an icon and a sound, so a child who cannot read a single word can open a category, play a quiz and collect a badge without help.

Does the app teach the Albanian alphabet?

Yes — the Letters category covers all 36 letters of the Albanian alphabet, each with an example word and audio. Albanian's digraphs (dh, gj, ll, nj, rr, sh, th, xh, zh) are treated as the letters they are rather than being skipped. Letters is one of the premium categories.

Which variety of Albanian does the app use?

Standard Albanian. It was a deliberate choice over Gheg or other regional forms, so that what a child learns matches what they will meet in school, in books and in writing.
